Intarsia is an art form believed to have started in Italy around the fourteenth century. The art form is accomplished by cuting and shaping various kinds of wood to form a pattern. Each piece of wood is selected for grain and color. It is then cut on a bandsaw and edge shaped to fit tightly to the adjacent pieces. Each piece is then sanded to a contour and raised or lowered to attain the desired affect.

Each art piece may well have up to as many as 200 pieces of shaped wood. The time required to complete a piece can range from a few hours to several days.
